On April 27, 2004 Senator John Ensign (R-NV) and Senator Mary Landrieu (D-LA) along with several of their colleagues introduced the American Horse Slaughter Prevention Act (S. 1915) in the US Senate. During his introduction, Senator Ensign said, "As a veterinarian, I am well aware of the love that Americans have for their horses. Much of our Nation's early history and culture is associated with these animals. We think of George Washington's horses and the legend of Paul Revere's ride and the Pony Express. And more recently, we were reminded of how the Depression Era race between Seabiscuit and War Admiral raised the spirit of our Nation."

Senator Ensign, one of only two veterinarians in the US Congress, is a natural leader on this very important legislation.
