Big success for anti horse-slaughter lobbyists
Watch Undercover Footage of U.S. Horses Exported to Mexico for Slaughter -- Then Take Action
From our friends at the humane society
Dear Friends,
Thanks to the hard work of activists like you, the American Horse Slaughter Prevention
Act (H.R. 503/S. 311) is steadily gaining support in Congress. However, a new threat to
this bill has emerged. The National Conference of State Legislatures (NCSL), an
organization made up of state lawmakers from across the country, will consider a pro-slaughter
resolution at its annual meeting in July. This short-sighted resolution, would ask Congress
NOT to pass the American Horse Slaughter Prevention Act, and could pressure federal legislators
into inaction.
We must not allow NCSL to be on record as opposing federal action on this issue. We must block
this resolution, which could give Congress yet another excuse to continue to allow the cruel
and inhumane slaughter of American horses in Mexico and Canada.
Ironically, it's the state legislatures that have acted recently to end horse slaughter -- shutting
down the last remaining slaughter plants in Illinois and Texas -- and this resolution flies in the
face of that strong record in the states on horse protection.
TAKE ACTION
Please call your state representatives to urge opposition to any pro-slaughter resolution at
the NCSL annual meeting.
When you call, you will likely speak to a staff member who can pass your message along to your
legislator. Please remember to be polite and professional, and leave your name and address so
it is clear that you are a constituent. You can say:
"Hello, my name is [your name] and I'm calling from [your town] to urge [legislator's name] to
oppose any pro-slaughter resolution at the National Conference of State Legislatures' annual meeting
in July. We need to end the cruel and inhumane slaughter of American horses in Canada and Mexico
for food exports."
After making your call, send an email to your state legislators in opposition to this resolution. And
don't forget to tell your friends and family about how they can help, too.
Thank you for all you do for animals.
Sincerely,
Wayne Pacelle

PLEASE TAKE ACTION TO ENSURE PASSAGE OF THE AMERICAN HORSE SLAUGHTER PREVENTION ACT
Dear friends,
Since it was reintroduced in January 2007, the American Horse Slaughter Prevention Act
(S. 311 - HR 503), a bill to ban the slaughter of US horses and their exportation for
slaughter abroad, has been waiting to be brought up for consideration in both the Senate
and the House where it currently being denied due process by a handful of pro-slaughter
Senators who believe the profits of three foreign-owned horse slaughter plants outweigh
the welfare and safety of American horses and horse owners alike.
This group of Senators, led by Senator Larry Craig (R–ID), has successfully blocked S.311
in the Senate, preventing the bill from being brought to a full Senate vote.
As the legislative deadline of mid-September set up by the upcoming elections approaches,
the need to get the AHSPA has become critical.
Both the Speaker of the House, Nancy Pelosi (D-CA), and Senate Majority Leader, Harry Reid
(D-NV), have the power to bring the bill up for consideration in their respectve chambers,
therefore it is vital that as many people as possible, both at the grassroots level and
internally within Congress, insist that the House Speaker and Senate Majority Leader do
everything in their power to afford the bills legislative due process and bring them
immediately to the floor for a vote.
How you can help:
a) Please contact Senate Majority Leader Sen. Harry Reid and House Speaker Nancy Pelosi
requesting them to do everything in their power to allow S. 311 (Senate) and H.R. 503
(House) asking them to immediately bring the bills to a vote!
b) Contact your own Representative and your own two Senators asking them to send a
personal request to Speaker of the House, Nancy Pelosi and Senate Majority Leader,
Harry Reid requesting that they break the pro-slaughter blockade on these two bills
and bring them up for consideration.
c) Ask your Congressman and two Senators to cosponsor HR 503 and S. 311 respectively
if they have yet not already done so. If your Members are already cosponsor's, please
thank them for their support.
Please share this alert with family and friends!!

Wonderful horse rescue group needs emergency help -- please donate!
Hi, I am the owner of Serenity Equine Rescue and Rehabilitation. I have been working on the PEC
case since last May. I have taken 22 horses from PEC, the last 10 were released to my custody in
Feb of this year with Animal Control standing by.
We had all the horses evaluated by a vet upon arrival and the vet stated in her reports that the
horses suffered from "severe neglect and animal cruelty". We took pictures of the issues with each
horse and documented everything. We also have been collecting statements from people who have had
experiences with Dean. We prepared a binder of documentation , vet reports, pictures of all the
horses and their specific problems, signed statements from people who had experiences with PEC/Dean
and gave all of it to AC.
Friday of last week AC sent Probable Cause paperwork to the prosecuting attorney's office and this
past Tuesday Dean was charged with 4 counts of 2nd degree animal cruelty with maybe more to come...
Her arraignment date is April 29th. We have been rehabilitating the horses and many still have along
way to go. Serenity is really struggling to care for all the horses and I am in need of some support.
I would be grateful if you could share this story with the horse community. Here is our website address

for any help you can give.

This year, thousands of horses will be sold without disclosure to buyers
representing foreign-owned slaughterhouses. These unscrupulous "killer buyers"
go to auctions and respond to "for sale" ads only to resell our horses for
"gourmet" meat in France, Japan, Italy and Belgium.
They have succeeded in confusing the American public with ludicrous terms like
"humane horse slaughter."
Americans do not eat their horses. Horses are companion animals. We would no
more allow the "regulation" of the slaughter and export of our dogs and cats to
countries where their meat is eaten than we should our horses.
The horrors of the auction, feed lot, transport, and slaughter house need to be
brought to the public's attention. This website will give you a glimpse into
the "hush-hush" industry of slaughtering horses for human consumption.
